Indian police say at least 21 children were killed when their school bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Police officer Sunil Kumar says initial reports indicate the bus driver was speeding and lost control at the edge of the gorge, dropping some 200 feet (60 meters) to the ground below.
The accident occurred on Monday in the Kangra Valley, about 500 kilometers (300 miles) from New Delhi.
Kumar says a rescue operation is continuing after nightfall. Few other details are available.

Heartbreaking to see children suffer like that. Road accidents are common in India, often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.

My ancestral village is there nearby and my uncle (Chacha ji) took part in the rescue work. He told about the horrifying scene there . Children make our lives beautiful and we have the responsibility and duty to see to it that they are not harmed in any way.

@Harmony - Thanks for your kind words. I too agree that poor driving and bad roads are very common in India. Perhaps India should take a leaf out of Pakistan and try to emulate, how to maintain roads and drive better.
