Nooh grabs bronze for Pakistan on Gold Coast

GOLD COAST: Pakistan’s young weightlifter Mohammad Nooh Dastagir Butt grabbed bronze medal in +105kg category here at the Commonwealth Games on Monday.

Pakistan received its second bronze medal in weightlifting as the 20-year-old Nooh picked 173kg weight in snatch and after failing in two attempts when he went for 177kg twice, he made a clean and jerk attempt, successfully picking 222kg. His aggregate was 395kg.

Nooh was behind gold medallist David Lityi (402kg) of New Zealand and Samoa’s Louiti Lui (400kg).

Talking to APP, Nooh said he wants to represent Pakistan at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

“I wish to win back more medals. I also thank my family, coach and above whole Pakistani nation for their prayers,” said a jubilant Nooh.

In boxing, Pakistan’s Syed Mohammad Asif moved to the round-of-16 in 52kg category defeating Brain Agina of Kenya 4-1.

In 60kg, Calum French of England blanked Pakistan’s Ali Ahmed 5-0 to reach the last-16 stage.

In swimming, Bisma Khan of Pakistan qualified for the heat of 50m backstroke by taking third position overall clocking 31.43sec.

She was behind leader Gemma Atherley (30.91sec) and Aaliyah Palestrini.

Pakistan’s Syed Mohammad Haseeb Tariq came seventh clocking a poor 24.82sec in 50m freestyle.
