KARACHI: Ziauddin University awarded 504 degrees to its graduating students of different disciplines at its 15th convocation held at the Expo Centre here on Wednesday.

Addressing the students, Sindh Governor Muha­mad Zubair, the chief guest on the occasion, emphasised the importance of quality education and praised the efforts of university chancellor Dr Asim Hussain for the institution.

Governor Zubair also lauded the role of late Dr Sir Ziauddin Ahmed in the field of education and societal development.

He said it was the responsibility of all people to make this country a better place.

Dr Asim Hussain addressing the convocation said: “Today we are celebrating the accomplishments of our brilliant students.”

He advised all the graduates: “Do not forget the role of the teachers in making you what you are today. You owe them utmost respect. You owe your parents not only for the upbringing, but also for the hard work and sacrifices they made to get you better education.”

He said that taking into consideration the prospects of CPEC, they had started civil, electrical power and software engineering programmes.

Earlier, Prof Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, the vice chancellor of the university, addressed the gathering.

There were also 10 gold medals awarded to the outstanding students. The recipients of Sir Ziauddin Ahmed Academic Excellence gold medals included Sana Zainab (dental surgery), Seemen Nadir Shah (biomedical), Talha Khan Tareen (media studies), Syed Faras Haroon Kirmani (media studies), Kiran Noor Uddin (medical technology), Sumana Binte Shahid (medical technology), Mohammad Hasnain Sheikh (generic), Nisa Momin (physical therapy), Aena Saeed (MBBS) and Sidra Munawar (PharmD).

This year Ziauddin University has awarded an honorary doctorate degree to Sardar Mohammad Yasin Malik for his services for social outreach.

Dr Mirza Tasawer Baig was also awarded a PhD in pharmacy.
