ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has received a special grant of Rs9 million from the federal government for the Davis Cup team and the tennis federation, which made the country proud as the national outfit defeated South Korea in the Davis Cup Asia Oceania Zone Group-I tie here in February this year.

The amount has been transferred into the accounts of the PSB, which will give the prize money to the players and the federation within the next few days.

“We have started the process of finalising cheques for the players and the federation,” said Azam Dar, PSB’s deputy director general, who is also spokesperson of the PSB.

He said that Rs1 million each will be given to veteran players Aisam-ul-Haq and Aqeel Khan, while Rs500,000 will be awarded to Abid Ali Akbar and Muzammil Murtaza, adding that Rs500,000 each will also be handed to coach Hameed-ul-Haq and team manager Mushaf Zia.

As per the federal government directive, Azam said, Rs5 million will be given to the federation. “Out of a total of Rs9 million supplementary grant, Rs4 million are meant for the players and coaches while Rs5 million are allocated for the [tennis] federation,” the PSB spokesman said.
