KARACHI: The Pakistan Rangers Sindh on Wednesday claimed to have foiled a bid to smuggle Indian gutka into the city.

The Rangers spokesperson said they were conducting snap checking on Mauripur Road in Lyari when they spotted five pickups.

“We stopped the vans and searched them. During the search, we found 5,000 kilogrammes of gutka hidden inside them. Its estimated value is about Rs6 million,” the official said.

“The gutka reached Afghanistan from India. From there, it was [brought] into Pakistan through Balochistan. When it was caught, it was being taken to Jodia Bazaar and old city areas of Kharadar from Yousuf Goth bus terminus,” he added.

The gutka has been handed over to Customs authorities for legal action.

Girl recovered, man arrested

The Sir Syed police on Wednesday arrested a suspect who allegedly kidnapped an 18-year-old girl and subjected her to criminal assault.

The suspect had kidnapped his relative girl from Nagan Chowrangi on June 11 and took her to Surjani Town where he along with his two accomplices allegedly gang-raped her and made her video with their mobile phones, said the police and her relatives.

The video was seized by the police.

On indication of the arrested person, the police conducted a raid in Bilal Colony and recovered the girl.

The other two suspects were still at large.

In another incident, the Gabol Town police recovered a 14-year-old kidnapped girl from Sanghar and arrested three suspects, said Central SSP (investigation) Amjad Hayat.

Meanwhile, a man, Mubashir, was shot dead by suspected robbers for putting up resistance near Qalandaria Chowk in North Nazimabad. The victim was a worker of Jamaat-i-Islami, said the party spokesperson.
