World’s sweetest internship

Mars Wrigley Confectionery posted a job opening, seeking applicants for the ‘World’s Sweetest Internship’ in Chicago.

The posting says the company is seeking a ‘confectionery connoisseur’ whose duties would include sampling the company’s chocolate, gum and confections — including several varieties not yet available to the public — and producing a personalised batch of chewing gum.

The paid intern would be required to chronicle their 8-12 week experience with the company on social media.

The position, which includes a year’s worth of candy as a signing bonus, features a few unusual qualifications for an ‘ideal candidate’, including being able to ‘distinguish all five fruity flavours from the Skittles rainbow in a blind taste-test.’

The posting says ideal candidates should also be able to ‘blow bubbles with chewing gum that are greater than five-inches in diameter.’

Nike fanny packsandals

The Nike Benassi has the classic slider sandal look, but with a useful fanny pack on the front.

Reminiscent of those novelty flip-flops with a bottle opener on the bottom — but this time it’s fashion — they’re dual use as shoes and somewhere to carry your keys.

The collection is called ‘Fanny Pack’, and has three options. They come in black and grey, or you can go for a more jazzy 80s look with the green and aqua or pink and black colour-ways. Fans seem pretty convinced that these are straight fire.

There’s not an exact price or release date yet, as these have just been leaked on street wear forums and websites, but one source confirms that these will ‘hit retailers soon’. They’d better get a move on for the holiday season.

Two melons sell for record $30,000 in Japan

The melons, grown in Yubari, Hokkaido, and sold for $29,436.80 at the Sapporo market, beat the $27,597 record set in 2016.

Shinya Noda, the winning bidder and president of fruit and vegetable packaging company Hokuyu Pack, said he wanted to make a large gesture to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his company.

“I wanted to make a record-setting bid by all means,” he told the Mainichi Shimbun.

Noda said the melons will go on display until the end of the month, when they will be cut up and distributed as free samples to market customers.

A total of 507 melons from Yubari were auctioned, the city’s agricultural cooperative said.

Ice cream with ketchup, mushy peas and marmite flavour

At Makcari’s in Herne Bay, the condiment otherwise reserved for fried potatoes and other savoury dishes has been turned into pudding.

Maker Nejmi Hassan is all for unlikely concoctions when crafting his ice cream.

At the parlour you’ll also find an ice cream flavoured with mushy peas and another with Marmite. The latter, we can only assume, is a love-or-hate type of affair.

Nejmi hopes his odd twists prove the ‘taste of the summer’. But he concedes too that the flavours are also for ‘acquired tastes’. After all, he’s mixing peas with double cream and Marmite with milky sweetness.

Nejmi churns ketchup into his red sauce blend and serves it with a sachet of Heinz — as if in a train station cafe or a fish and chip shop.

His mushy peas ice cream comes with a green swirl running throughout and his Marmite cones are served with a slice of toast.
