ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed a candidate backed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Bilal Azhar Kiani, to contest the election from National Assembly constituency NA-66, Jhelum.

A three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar had taken up the appeal of Mr Kiani against the decision of the election tribunal which had rejected his papers because of his dual nationality.

Advocate Qamar Afzal told the court that his client had renounced his dual nationality before filing the nomination papers. The court suspended the election tribunal’s decision and allowed Mr Kiani to contest the election.

Bilal Kiani is the son of retired Gen Azhar Kiani, the head of the Rawalpindi Institute of Cardiology.
