KARACHI is a metropolis of more than 20 million souls and has gargantuan problems.

It is hard to imagine that a city of such a size has inadequate public transport facilties. The result is complete bedlam and chaos on its roads, especially during peak rush hours.

Owing to the lack of mass transit facilities, the volume of vehicular traffic on the roads is huge and the popular modes of transport are motorcycles and rickshaws.

Unfortunately, motorcyclists as well as rickshaw drivers are notorious for rash driving as well as violating traffic rules. It is common to see motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers violating traffic signals and driving on the wrong side of the road. The traffic police seem helpless to deal with these violations and the malady has assumed the proportion of a plague. Many a citizen is injured daily owing to these law breakers.

The provincial authorities and Karachi police should initiate a ruthless crackdown on traffic violations. This is the only answer to restore law and order in traffic flow.
