The Sindh High Court Hyderabad circuit Bench on Thursday restrained the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) from notifying the official result of the PS-82 constituency of Jamshoro district.

The order was given following a petition filed by one of the losing candidates of PS-82, Dr Sikandar Shoro.

Shoro, through his counsel Farogh Naseem, requested the court to order the Returning Officer of PS-82 to recount the total votes.

The counsel further pleaded that the announcement of the official election result should be withheld until the recounting was carried out on the SHC's order.

Naseem maintained that as per the ECP's rules of 5 per cent difference between the votes of the winning candidate and a candidate seeking a recount, his client had the legal right to avail the recount.

According to the preliminary result prepared by the RO, the petitioner Dr Shoro received 36,012 votes against the winning candidate Malik Asad Sikandar of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) who received 40,602 votes.

The SHC while restraining the ECP from declaring the result put the respondents including the ECP, RO, and others on notice for August 6.
