KARACHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the chairman of the National Highway Authority (NHA) to file a report about redesigning of Jamshoro-Sehwan Road within a month.

A three-judge bench of the apex court headed by Justice Gulzar Ahmed came down hard on NHA chairman Jawad Rafiq Malik over rising accidents on Jamshoro-Sehwan Road and said people were being killed daily in accidents on the road.

Justice Ahmed also expressed dissatisfaction over construction of the M-9 by the NHA and said that it was difficult to drive on that thoroughfare.

He warned that now if anyone died in an accident on Jamshoro-Sehwan Road, the case would be registered against NHA officials and they would also have to compensate the victims.

The NHA chief told the bench that they were making efforts to rectify the flaws in the design of the road.

The bench directed him to come up with a report within a month regarding redesigning of the road as well as the details of protective measures taken on the part of the NHA.

The petitioner contended that hundreds of accidents had taken place on 132-kilometre-long Jamshoro-Sehwan Road and loss of lives had been increasing owing to lack of protective measures by the NHA.

ACE closes inquiry against PML-N senator

The ACE through a report informed the bench that the inquiry had been concluded and the statement of the petitioner recorded, adding that investigation was closed for want of evidence.

The ACE had initiated the inquiry against the PML-N senator over allegation of illegally acquiring 274 acres of agricultural land in the name of her family members in Tando Allahyar during her tenure as district nazim in 2005-06.

Subsequently, the PML-N senator through her lawyer Khawaja Naveed moved the SHC for pre-arrest bail and contended that she was being subjected to political victimisation by the PPP.
