GUJRAT: The PML-Q workers celebrated the election of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as Punjab Assembly Speaker by dancing on the drum beats and distributing sweets in parts of Gujrat city as well as in Kunjah and Mungowal towns of the district.

The enthusiastic workers gathered at Shah Jahangir Road, adjacent to the Zahoor Elahi House of the Chaudhrys to celebrate their leader’s victory.

One of the jubilant PML-Q workers said the party had come into power in Punjab after 10 years while expectations of the people of Gujrat had been high from both the coalition partners to resolve their basic issues while being in the government at the centre as well as in Punjab.

“Pervaiz Elahi has won with a thumping majority on both the constituencies NA-69 and PP-30 Gujrat with a record number of votes and he has, once again, surprised the political circles by bagging some 201 votes to win the Speaker Punjab Assembly election which was no doubt an honour for the people of this city,” he added.

Another man said the PML-N government had consistently ignored the Gujrat city in terms of uplift, particularly in resolving the long standing problem of poor sewerage and drainage system, only due to the political rivalry with the Chaudhrys and hopefully Pervaiz Elahi would be able to address these major issue as well as the other problems.

Meanwhile, the PML-Q workers gathered at the main office of Mungowal Union Council chairman Amjad Iqbal Butt where the workers and supporters celebrated the victory of Mr Elahi by dancing on the drum beats and the people were also served with sweets.

In Kunjah too, the PML-Q men celebrated the victory of their leader and expressed hope that the basic problems of the area would be given a priority by the coalition government of the PTI and PML-Q.

Apart from this, a large number of union council chairmen and party workers of PML-Q reached the Punjab Assembly as well as the Lahore residence of Pervaiz Elahi to felicitate him on the success.

It is pertinent to mention Pervaiz Elahi had won two seats from Gujrat NA-69 and PP-30; however, he vacated NA-69 where his son Moonis Elahi is expected to contest the by-polls as a joint candidate of the PML-Q and PTI.
