FAISALABAD, June 10: The demarcation of the ‘biggest’ Tehsil Municipal Administration in the country will be made afresh after which the areas falling under the TMA Saddar will become part of the city for the creation of five towns.

The plan is being pursued according to the amended local-government system.

Sources told Dawn on Friday that on the proposals of the PML parliamentarians, the Punjab government has finalized the plan to give Faisalabad a status of city district by redesigning the boundaries of the TMAs of city and Saddar.

The Faisalabad TMA city comprises 113 union councils and 162 councillors, including members of special seats.

According to the plan, around 161 union councils of both the administrations will be divided into five towns while the remaining tehsils — Samundri, Jaranwala, Tandlianwala and Chak Jhumra — will be given the status of town councils.

In Town No 1, the city areas of Clock Tower, Model Town, University of Agriculture, Hajveri Town, railway station, Civil Lines, Factory Area, Sir Syed Town, Ghulam Muhammadabad, Kanak Basti, Sidhupura, Bawa Chak, and Saddar union councils 164, 165, 166, 167, 168 and 170 will be included. A total of 32 union councils will be included in the town having a population of 633,398.

The Town No 2 will have the city areas of Noorpur, Gokhuwal, Taj Colony, Bole-di-Jugi, Gulistan Colony, Mansoorabad, Malikpur, Manawala, Gatti, and Saddar union councils 169, 171, 172, 173, 174 and 175. The town has a population of 615,796.

Some 32 union councils from rural and urban areas have been included in the proposed town.

While People’s Colony, Batala Colony, Fatehabad, Sohailabad, Yasrab Colony, Kahkshan Colony, Dhudiwala, Officers Colony, Khayaban Colony, Saeed Colony, Raza Town, Abadi 204 Wali, besides rural union councils 142, 143, 144, 145, 146 and 176 will become a part of the Town No 3.

As many as 31 union councils have been included in this town having a population of 601,459.

The Town No 4 will have congested city localities — Nawabanwala, Samanabad, Mansoorabad, Ucha Muraba, Aminabad, D-Type Colony, Korian, Allama Iqbal Colony and Shadipura. Rural union councils 129, 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, 135, 136, 137, 138, 139, 140, 141, 147, 148, 149 and 150 will also be part of this town having a population of 629,453.

In Town No 5, Nazimabad, Khalidabad, Harcharnpura, Ayub Colony, Gulfishan Colony, Sher Singwala, Gurunankpura, Jinnah Colony, Nadirwali and Razaabad, besides rural union councils No 151, 152, 153, 154, 155, 156, 157, 158, 159, 160, 161, 162 and 163 will be included. It has a population of 610,115 in 32 UCs of both rural and urban areas.

Following the implementation of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance 2001, the Tehsil Municipal Administration (City) replaced the Faisalabad Municipal Corporation. While adjoining rural areas like Dijkot, Khurrianwala, Gatwala, Thikriwala and other small villages were made part of the newly-created TMA Saddar.

It is pertinent to mention here that the TMA Saddar could not work according to the wishes of the people as well as the planners, which could be judged from the fact that its nazim and naib nazim had resigned and contested the general election. However, both of them lost the election.

The TMA Saddar set up its offices at the city administration’s complex, but the latter demanded a huge money as rent due to which the former’s councillors left the complex and grabbed the district council rest house. The construction of the TMA Saddar offices is still in progress.

Sources further said the TMAs of Tandlianwala, Samundri, Jaranwala and Chak Jhumra were also being given the status of towns. In this scenario, the Faisalabad City District would comprise nine towns.

Meanwhile, after the plan of creating five towns, several aspirants for the local election appeared on the scene and launched efforts for obtaining tickets of major political parties.

Previously, the mainstream parties were contemplating nomination of only four candidates for nazim and naib nazim’s slots of two TMAs — Saddar and city. But in the wake of the development, the leadership of political parties would have to field 10 candidates in these areas for nazims and naib nazims of towns.
