India on Saturday beat Pakistan 2-1 in the decider for the third position in hockey during Asian Games 2018.
According to The News the Indian men's team continued to dominate over Pakistan as they bagged the bronze medal after they had failed to impress against Malaysia.
During the match, Akashdeep Singh scored a field goal in the third minute and gave his team an early lead which Pakistan had a hard time catching up on. India's advantage was doubled when Harmanpreet Singh scored another goal off a penalty corner in the 50th minute.
Muhammad Ateeq managed to reduce the margin for Pakistan in the 52nd minute, however, the game was lost by that time.

Once we were the champions of field hockey when it was played on our normal surfaces. Then astroturf came and spoiled the game. It is like playing in the swamp and requires an entirely different kind of grounds to practice.

Once again, green-shirts fumbled when and where it mattered most. Once again, they have disappointed millions if not billions of their domestic and global fans, peers, pals, supporters, associates, family members, relatives, colleagues, sponsors, admirers, country-men and women. However, this is definitely not the end of field hockey, any where in the world. Pakistan Zindabaad, 225 million hardworking, brave and patriotic people of Pakistan, Paeendabaad.

Pakistan managed to get only 4 bronze medals....and ranked 34th in Asian Games 2016, almost at the bottom of the list. Interestingly, about 300 players and 100 officials from Pakistan traveled to Indonesia incurring huge cost. This shows our sincerity in sports.

Win and loss are part of the game.
It was a tough contest.
Congrats Indian team.
In this subcontinent, cricket was only given importance and all other games were treated stepbrotherly. Last few years hockey is also getting front seat at corner.

Pakistan will do well if they concentrate on sports. Pakistani volleyball team did very well in these Asian games. Beating China in volleyball is no mean achievement. Arshad is very good at Javelin throw. Pakistan can build on these performances. Iran should be a role model for Pakistan. Iran is on the verge of becoming Asian sports power. There is no reason why Pakistan can't get medals in wrestling and boxing. There is not a lot of infrastructure needed for these sports.

Both countries could not reach to final and lost to Malaysia and Japan respectively. Malaysia and Japan are not strong sides like Australia, England, Germany, Netherlands or even Argentina. What a sad day for South Asian hockey!. Pumping 50 goals to non-hockey playing countries in preliminary rounds will not give gold or silver to former champions.

Team is playing well but probably lacks in confidence - they need to believe in themselves if they want to win at big stage. They impress at the start but need to finish on a high note too.
Further, I think they are missing a role model or a “go to” player in the team - like a Samiullah, Hasan Sardar, Shahbaz or a Sohail Abbas - need someone to step up and become an specialist and rest of the team will follow.

Why do green-shirts in field hockey have got a tendency lately to fumble when it matters most? The answer to this intriguing and interesting question is left at the discretion, discussion and deliberation of the enlightened, educated, enduring and excelling readers and writers of this great DAWN forum, by far, the # one English daily of the world.

In the neighbouring country like India all eyes are on Prime Minister Imran Khan and his team. Living in a small house, selling the luxury cars of the past PM’s fleet, converting the magnificent buildings into universities are similar dramas many Indian leaders used to do.
We don’t see any sense of urgency in addressing the economy, foreign exchange reserves, corruption, foreign policy etc. Most of his ministers are speaking loud with no big agenda for change for which they have been voted to power.
In India quite a sizeable population wants a strong and peaceful Pakistan. So far we all such people are disheartened the way things are moving.

In modern hockey, no country can live on its past glory .Not even Australia. There is so much competition from around the world.See how Belgium and Argentina are becoming powers. So the emotional baggage of past glories need to be left behind .Teams need to strive and adapt according to what the game is at present.
