Women suspected of stealing beaten up violently at Lahore market

Two women accused of stealing clothes from a shop in Lahore were violently thrashed by the shop owners, it emerged on Thursday.
Leaked footage of the incident, which occurred in a bazaar near Jallo Mor on G.T. Road on Wednesday, was obtained by DawnNewsTV.
The disturbing footage shows a number of men taking turns to beat up the two women using a thick cane. They also repeatedly slap, kick and hit the women with shoes.
The violence continues despite desperate cries of pain from the pair. In one part of the leaked footage, the women are seen being beaten up, sitting on the floor inside a shuttered shop.
The victims were accused of attempting to steal a bundle of clothes from a shop in the market.
The man who inflicted the violence on the women is reportedly associated with the Pakistan Kabaddi Federation.
Instead of approaching the police over the alleged theft, the shop owners resorted to thrashing the women and subsequently let them go.
After the footage of the violence was leaked, police made a move to act against the suspects. However, the shop owners are currently absconding and their houses and shop were to be locked, sub-inspector Mukhtar told DawnNewsTV.

This incident should be investigated, as no body has the right to take law in their own hands. If the shop keeper suspected a wrongdoing in his shop then he should have called police to question the two women - this is the proper and civilised way.

Those who assaulted woman should be arrested and put in jail for their crime. They could have simply handed over the woman to the Police, if she was found guilty of stealing. Both our religious and societal norms teach us respect and tolerance for women, since they are vulnerable and exists in the shape mothers, daughters and sisters. The man, who beat up the women, does not seem to have had respect for his womenfolk.

The men associated with this cruelty must get exemplary punishment and the women subjected to this atrocity be compensated by the perpetrators of this crime. We shall keely follow up on that. Authorities need to emphasise and ensure that violence in any form against citizens either by police or others is totally unacceptable. Punishment should be severe and quick as a message to all who engage in such cruelty.

Unacceptable behaviour. If these women were caught stealing it is not an excuse to indulge in violence. It could be they mistakenly picked up the clothes. We dont know. Just because the shopkeepers were men does not give them the right to inflict pain on those that are weaker than them. We do not know the circumstances of these women, or how desperate they were. Its a fault of law that does not protect shop keepers as well as accused customers. In this case shop keepers are doing wrong if the customers trying to steel is also wrong. Government failed to make laws easily acceptable to its citizens and citizens take law in heir had just as the case here.

This is a serious matter and the perhaps CM needs to step in. If women had stolen (past tense) shop keeper can call police they had phones and information.
Beating people up like this is unacceptable. Remember the horrific incident in Sialkot several years ago where two young men lost their lives for alleged stealing. Horrific crime and nothing came out of that.
These men should be tried for assault—I hope some lawyers can step in and do a great service to justice.

Women and young girls are defenseless and are easy victims of violence. In Jamshedpur (India), many years ago, a minor poor Adivasi girl accused of stealing a few pieces of coal was mercilessly beaten by the coal depot owners, in front of many shopkeepers. Many bystanders simply watched without interfering.

So, people have come forward to help themselves and let the criminals give a little taste of their wrongdoings.

Total intolerance be it religious or otherwise has taken roots in the pschye of nation irrespective of their status or literacy standings. This tendency of adopting role police, prosecution and judge, is everywhere and it glimpses of its ugly happenings Is everywhere. One feels ashamed of being part of this civil society where such high handedness in broad daylight is tolerated without intervention by those witnessing it. We must raise our voice to such abhorring behavior and deter those who commit such acts considering themselves to be above law. One can hope that police will apprehend those committing this act and prosecute them so that such unpleasant and very shameful events are not repeated in future.

With so many cases pending at the courts. This case will be lost in time. I felt that the courts should not have allowed bail as this would have forced the accused to ensure that proper hearings are conducted which could have provided courts with an opportunity to set a precedent in such cases. Now I fear that people will be emboldened that they can get away with such crimes as even if they are caught they can get bail.
