SUKKUR, June 14: Hundreds of people of Old Sukkur and New Pind, including women and children, staged a protest demonstration and sit-in on the Jail road on Tuesday following the non-supply of water on the fourth consecutive day. They said nearly half of the population of the city including Old Sukkur Microwave colony, Qureshi Goth, Numaish, New Pind and other areas were still without water as 20-inch diameter main water pipeline was not restored even after the lapse of four days.

They said due to non-supply of water in their respective areas, they have to go to far-flung areas to fetch the water, while municipal authorities were not supplying water through tankers.

On the other hand, the fire brigade officials were claiming that they were supplying water through five vehicles but could not supply water to all the affected areas due to shortage of fire brigade vehicles.

PROTEST: More than 100 farmers staged a demonstration outside the Thull press club on Tuesday in protest against water shortage.

Mohammad Nawaz Kandrani, Bijar Khan and Naseer Soomro led the protesters.

They raised slogans against the irrigation officials.

They said the Thull distributary and Naseer canal were without water while irrigation officials were not paying attention towards our genuine problem due to which our crops were drying.

BANDITS HELD: Five alleged bandits were arrested after an encounter with the police near Khanpur Mahar, Ghotki district, on Tuesday.

They had hijacked a motorcycle from a man, Akhtar Pitafi, who according to the police, had identified the armed men and informed the police about the incident.

Sources said the police team chased the armed men and after an exchange of fire near Bori Pull village all the five bandits surrendered.

They were identified as Achhoo Pitafi, Sarwar Pitafi, Nazar Pitafi, Mehboob Pitafi and Adam Korai.

Police recovered four Kalashnikov rifles and a shotgun from them, the sources claimed.

ANTI-POLIO DRIVE: DCO Shafique Khoso has directed officers of the health department to mobilize all resources to ensure anti-polio campaign from June 21 to 23 a success so that no child was left unattended during the campaign, according to official press statement issued here on Tuesday.

Speaking at a meeting, he stressed the need for creating awareness among the masses regarding hazardous effects of the disease.

Earlier, EDO health Dr Karim Baloch briefed the DCO about the surveillance report, performance of the last round and micro plan of the next round.

He said vaccination target of 194,113, would be achieved by engaging 579 teams during the campaign.

The inaugural ceremony of the campaign will be held on June 20 at the Fatima Zuhra Maternity Home Royal Road.
