Court gives Punjab govt authority to auction off Dar's assets

An accountability court on Tuesday handed the Punjab government the authority to either auction off or keep in its possession the assets of absconding former finance minister Ishaq Dar in a case pertaining to possession of assets beyond his known sources of income.
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had earlier moved the accountability court for the auction of movable and immovable properties owned by Dar as he has been in London since Oct 2017. He was declared an absconder by the court in Dec 2017 after he failed to join the trial against himself.
Following the filing of the reference against Dar in the accountability court last September, NAB had seized all of his movable and immovable assets. These included a house in Gulberg III, Lahore; three plots in the Al-Falah Housing Society, Lahore; six acres of land in Islamabad; a two-kanal plot in the Parliamentarians Enclave, Islamabad; a plot in the Senate Cooperative Housing Society, Islamabad; another plot measuring two kanals and nine marlas in Islamabad; and six vehicles.
NAB alleged that Dar acquired in his name and/or in the names of his dependants assets worth Rs831.7 million, which is disproportionate to the known sources of his income.
Accountability court Judge Mohammad Bashir had earlier reserved his verdict on the NAB request and today ordered a compliance report regarding the seizure of three plots in Al-Falah Society and vehicles belonging to Dar.
The court remarked that action against Dar's assets abroad would also be deliberated on the basis of the law.
NAB presented in court today a report detailing Dar's assets, according to which three bank accounts in Pakistan are under his name, while three are held by his company, Hajveri Holdings Pvt Ltd.
His property holdings in Pakistan were described as follows:
- House in Lahore's Gulberg area
- Plot in Mauza Bhubtiam
- 3 plots in Al-Falah Housing Society Lahore, owned by Ishaq Dar, his wife and son
- six acres land in Islamabad's Mauza Milot
- Two kanal plot in Islamabad's Parliamentarian Enclave
- Two kanal plot with Ayaz Builders (Pvt) Ltd
- Plots in Islamabad's Senate Cooperative Housing Society
Dar also possesses three Land Cruisers, two Mercedes vehicles and one Toyota Corolla in Pakistan.
The former finance minister's investments in the country amount to Rs3,455,760 in shares in Hajveri Holdings and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Ltd.
Among his assets in foreign countries are two flats in Dubai, a Bentley, a Mercedes, and an unspecified amount in shares and investments in Baraq Holding Pvt Ltd and Dar Al Nahayan Pvt Ltd.

Rule should be equal for all. Musharraf has assets beyond means. Many top judges are billionaires already. Also many top politicians of PTI are under NAB inquiry. This rule should be applied to all. Excellent - however let’s ask ourselves why a finance minister would abscond in the first place and even more importantly why was he appointed if he had such low moral character . Surley all those involved in appointing him (not just the PM) should be reprimanded .
I remember when he was finance minister he was spending a lot of time attending khatame nabuwaat meetings etc instead of concentrating on his ministry - he was NOT the minister of religious affairs but nobody bothered stopping him

Before anyone starts jumping with joy, the net proceeds from the auctions of various Ishaq Dar assets, will likely recover only a fraction of the amount of money he took with him on a special jet, suitcases and boxes full of cash. In addition to hundrds of millions of dollars he transfered out of government exchequer while he was Finance Minister with NS.
Yet, no word on when the government will move to seize assets of NS and his children in Pakistan??

It might be better for Punjab Govt to hold on to most of Ishaq Dar's property assets and auction some, slowly, over time, to get best prices. Some others might be useful to construct and use for governmental purposes. Also, while property in Dar's name can be confiscated and thus sold or used, under law his wife and children can't be victimized. If they own any property in their name, or share in joint properties, these shares must be protected and returned or sold and equivalent price paid to them. Crimes of the fathers cannot be visited upon the offspring.

Former Finance Minister Ishaq Dar is "guilty" of massive corruption and money laundering. If he was innocent, he would have taken the first flight back to face the Court. Instead, he fled the country and faked his illness in London. Since then he has been seen and filmed walking around in London being perfectly normal. The FIA had issued his arrest warrant, he must be brought back on the order of the Court. The people demand accountability. No politician can be above the law.

The government is considering this act to be feather in the cap. WRONG, Ishaq Dar had only 15 to 20 % in Pakistan. His overseas worth, by a conservative estimate, is $890 million dollars. Plus he has access to many overseas accounts which he has concealed for other politicians including Sharif's. He had planed this takeover many years ago.

Dar’s assets are being confiscated for living beyond his means which is an appropriate step. Why not confiscate assets of Nawaz Sharif? By the way there is no news confirming that Nawaz, Maryam and Safdar even deposited the fines imposed by the accountability court. Also strange is that several cases were opened by NAB against Shahbaz Sharif but there seems to be no visible progress on these cases and no news. Has a deal been made with the Sharifs? The business as usual continues in the continuing absence of law

I hope this is the beginning of the PTI pre-election promise of 'tsunami'. However, the inevitable sword of Damocles, namely, the mighty justice demands equal time for all the components of the corrupt machinery. This must start simultaneously with the dubious past of some of the PTI top brass itself. If this doesn't happen soon enough, the cry-foul whistle will go off and will be heard loud and clear. The expectations with PTI have been raised to prohibitive levels by the PTI prime leadership and people would not like to see the ugly gorges coming out of indigestion. The voters would like to see manifest 'tabdeeli', not dust in their eyes.

Laws and procedures should be applicable to all the absconders who fail to appear to face the charges in courts. Best example is Ex dictator Musharraf who is living outside the country driving very expensive and fancy cars. When he was in Pakistan he pretended to be very sick/ chest pains and spent most of his time in military hospitals. As soon he is in the plane to leave the country, all of a sudden he has no symptoms of any health issues. He faked his health condition to get out. He has missed many court dates and warnings, its time we get serious and auction off all his properties in the country. We should also ask Interpol to arrest him and send him back to Pakistan to stand trial. Time for playing games is over.

Mr Dar was merely a CA (though he ran monetary & fiscal policies of the country some how) and a full audit of his gained wealth ought to be done prior to auctioning off his properties. If he doesn’t show up, provide a solicitor who can go between him and the vigil government (of present). Given benefit of doubt and his qualifications, he may have used his skills to invest and accumulated assets. However, has anyone questioned Mr Zardari’s palaces unless he was engaged in 9-5 gainful employment regularly till his retirement age? Justice served got to be for all in an Islamic Republic!

Dar is considered a small fish compared to the monsters out there hiding their wealth, but its a start, a great start. 116 individuals have already been recognized as non filers of taxes, and many more will be added to the list, its time to pay taxes, another way to generate revenue, to live free in Pakistan is over, we pray.
