KARACHI: More than 65 people, including two policemen, were on Tuesday booked and arrested for driving on the wrong side of the road.

Traffic authorities have launched a crackdown that began in all three zones of the police organisational structure after Karachi police chief Dr Ameer Ahmed Shaikh ordered the arrest of motorists and motorcyclists travelling on the wrong side of the road. The traffic authorities were also told to impound their vehicles.

Following the directives, the traffic police appeared more active and vigilant by taking action against the violators.

It registered 69 cases under Section 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Two policemen were also among those caught violating the traffic rules in Saddar area.

Apart from 69 FIRs and arrests, the traffic police also issued challan and imposed nearly Rs1 million fine against motorists for different violations, said a police spokesman.
