LAHORE: Former vice chancellors (VCs) of two public sector universities and other officials of the respective institutions facing charges of corruption and misuse of power have approached the Lahore High Court (LHC) for their release on bail.

Punjab University’s former VC Dr Mujahid Kamran and University of Sargodha’s former VC Dr Muhammad Akram filed the bail petitions. Retired Brig Rao Jamil and Naeem Mukhtar also sought bail in a case of illegal sub-campuses of the University of Sargodha (UoS).

In his bail petition, Dr Kamran pleaded, through his counsel, he had achieved high distinction in the field of physics and was honoured with Sitara-i-Imtiaz for services in education sector. He said he had devoted his life to prepare great minds for the best future of the country. He asked the court to accept his petition and grant him bail.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had arrested Dr Kamran and others on charges of making illegal appointments in the PU.

Dr Muhammad Akram and other officials of the UoS contended that the allegations of corruption in establishing sub-campuses of the varsity were baseless. They questioned their arrest, saying the legal formalities had not been fulfilled by NAB. They asked the court to accept their petition and order their release on bail. All the petitioners are in jail on judicial remand.
