ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad Bar Council (IBC) on Saturday adopted a resolution seeking appointment of Athar Minallah as chief justice of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) and induction of suitable lawyers from Islamabad on the vacant posts of the high court judges.

IBC is the regulator of lawyers of the federal capital as well as the bar associations of Islamabad.

The meeting was convened at the district courts of Islamabad to discuss the top appointments in the judiciary.

The lawyers representatives from the Islamabad High Court (IHC) bar association and district bar association of Islamabad endorsed the resolution tabled by the IBC’s vice chairman Fiaz Jandran.

The lawyers leaders welcomed the proposal of the chief justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar for elevation of senior puisne judge Justice Athar Minallah as IHC chief justice.

The public relations office of the Supreme Court on Oct 23 issued a press release that said: “Hon’ble Mr Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Chief Justice of Pakistan / Chairman Judicial Commission of Pakistan has convened the meeting of Judicial Commission of Pakistan on November 1, 2018 at Supreme Court Islamabad to consider the name of Hon’ble Mr Justice Athar Minallah, Senior Puisne Judge Islamabad High Court for appointment as Chief Justice of Islamabad High Court.”

The lawyers bodies further demanded from the Judicial Commission of Pakistan to consider the local lawyers for three vacant posts of judges in the IHC.

The resolution, however, said that in case it is imperative to induct a judge from other province, an Islamabad based lawyer must be considered for the vacant post of that particular provincial high court.
