Sindh govt reinstates Landhi Jail superintendent suspended on directives of CJP Nisar

The Sindh government on Monday reinstated the Landhi Jail superintendent who was suspended on the instructions of Chief Justice Saqib Nisar, after the top judge found during a surprise visit to the penitentiary last week that Shahrukh Jatoi — the main accused in the 2012 Shahzeb murder case — had been accorded extraordinary facilities in a C-class jail.
Upon witnessing the facilities granted to Jatoi — which, from a recording of the visit, seem to include a large flat-screen TV — the top judge was considerably irked. He immediately ordered that Jatoi be transferred to a death row cell and instructed the IG Prisons to submit a report on why he had been given preferential treatment.
According to details available with Dawn, the IG Prisons appeared before the chief justice on Saturday and clarified his position with respect to the matter.
The IG Prisons said that the Landhi Jail superintendent was posted there only a week earlier and was not aware of the matter.
He said the Sindh government was carrying out efforts for the betterment of prisons in the province, and assured that all orders of the top judge were implemented in true letter and spirit.
Later, the registrar office of the apex court advised the Sindh home secretary that the provincial government can reinstate the jail superintendent if it so desires. The jail superintendent was subsequently reinstated to his post on Monday.
The CJP had ordered an inquiry and action against the officials responsible for providing unwarranted facilities to the death row prisoner.
An anti-terrorism court had sentenced Jatoi and his friend Nawab Siraj Ali Talpur to death in June 2013 for killing 20-year-old student Shahzeb Khan on Dec 25, 2012 near his home in Defence Housing Authority, Karachi.

The whole system is corrupt. The ruling elite has corrupted all the institutions nobody cal clean this mes.
The only way system could have changed, the day CJ walked in the jail cell he could have hanged Jatoi and the Jail officer for not implementing the law.

Our justice system provides every citizen the right to bring his/her case to the court of law, the justice system should give PROMPT verdict and then government should ensure that the verdict is implemented. Respected CJ should address the cases brought to him in the court of law rather going out on raids to ensure that the verdict is implemented. I honestly believe that it is wrong to provide any criminal with facilities but then again the justice system should provide justice, governing and ensuring the implementation of verdict should fall under the domain of government. With all due respect, there are already enough cases piled up in courts, we are lagging big time on the verdicts let aside the implementation of verdicts. CJ is not the elected representative of the people. I humbly believe that the power of suo moto should also be amended through parliament so that upcoming CJ's do not waste energy on the cases of their own choosing. Let people bring their cases to the courts.

This effort had started with providing flat TV and airconditioned from the cell of Shahrukh Jatoi and eventually (he did not used the proverbial Inshallah though) every prisoner would get one flat TV and adirconditioner. Wonderful statement.

I can say with near 100% certainty that Jatoi would have started to enjoy the VIP treatment right after the CJP ended his visit. He belongs to one of the Lord's family of Sind, and not even CJP can ensure that justice is served!

Its been six years now that Shahrukh Jatoi cold bloodedly murdered Shahzeb, we all know that, but still he is enjoying VVIP facilities in jail, watching TV in an airconditioned room. Is there anyone who believes that he will get capital punishment? NO one.

Even if he was posted one day ago, he should have visited the cells as his first assignment. Had he done it, he would have found about it. He is still guilty of serious negligence misconduct.

Is it not a flawed explanation that the superintendent gave a murderer such facilities upon his new appointment. But there is no way to control this, who is going to check, shahrukh might be enjoying luxury facilities even right now. Suspension was least that could have been done.

@Tiqbal - You have wonderful logic, Tiqba! You say "Respected CJ should address the cases brought to him in the court of law rather going out on raids to ensure that the verdict is implemented." So then let the courts convict the criminals all they want - and then let the wadera criminals have a great time while perhaps the hari criminals could be actually awarded the punishments. Shame on us for having such a mindset! But it has taken us years to get to this stage where the money has bought politicians, bureaucrats, police, etc. and even our mindset.
