LODHRAN: A former station house officer (SHO) and a sub-inspector were sentenced to life imprisonment with Rs100,000 fine each in Dunyapur on Wednesday in a murder case.

Additional District and Session Court Judge Afaq Ahmed Jaja handed down life imprisonment to convicts former Jalla Araein SHO Sheikh Akbar, sub-inspector Zafar Iqbal and Ashfaq, and released six co-accused for the lack of proof in the murder case.

The prosecution said that in October 2014, SHO Akbar arrested a private person, Qari Afzal, in Jabalpur Pirwala. During interrogation, Afzal died due to the alleged torture in the police custody.

His brother submitted an application against the police officials. On Wednesday, when the court announced the verdict, only sub-inspector Zafar was present and subsequently arrested in court.

Former SHO Akbar and his servant Ashfaq could not be arrested.
