KARACHI: A senior journalist was allegedly taken away by law enforcement agencies from his home on Saturday, according to media organisations.

Nasrullah Khan Chaudhry, who is associated with Urdu daily Nai Baat, was detained by security personnel during a raid on his home, said a statement issued by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists-Dastoor (PFUJ-Dastoor).

It said the whereabouts of the journalist were not known.

An emergency meeting of the PFUJ group was held at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) later in the day to discuss the issue. Presided over by PFUJ-Dastoor secretary general Sohail Afzal Khan, the meeting was attended by the KPC office-bearers and senior journalists.

The participants expressed concern over ‘illegal detention’ of Mr Chaudhry and termed it an attack on the freedom of media.

They were of the view that the detention of Mr Chaudhry was aimed at ‘sabotaging’ the ongoing protest of journalists over ‘forcible intrusion and harassment’ of journalists allegedly by law enforcers on the KPC premises on Thursday night.

The statement urged the Sindh governor and chief minister, corps commander Karachi, director general of Rangers and inspector general of Sindh Police to take notice of the incident. It called for release of Mr Chaudhry and cessation of tactics of harassing journalists.

Journalists will hold a demonstration outside the KPC on Sunday in protest against Mr Chaudhry’s ‘detention’.
