HARIPUR: An illegally-constructed block factory was razed in Khanpur area during an anti-encroachment drive here on Sunday.
Led by assistant commissioner Dr Adil Ayub, the officials of tehsil municipal administration and police were part of the drive starting from Tarnava area.
The demolition squad used machinery for razing the two-room building of the factory that was built on government land.
Dr Ayub said the factory owners were occupying government land for which they were served with notices several times but they continued their business, which led to the forced razing of the small factory.
The assistant commissioner said hundreds of kanals of government land had been in illegal occupation of people and that during the ongoing operation such land would be retrieved without taking into account how influential the occupants were.
WOMAN KILLED ON ROAD: A woman was killed when a speeding van hit her near Mohra Kalanwan village on GT Road on Sunday. Police and witnesses said the woman was crossing the road after getting off a passenger bus, when a recklessly driven van coming from Abbottabad knocked her down.
The critically injured woman was shifted to the district headquarters hospital, Haripur, but the doctors pronounced her dead. The deceased was later identified as Rashida Bibi, who came to attend a marriage ceremony in Mohra Kalanwan from Golra Sharif, Islamabad.
DEATH ANNIVER-SARY: The first death anniversary of senior journalist Khanzada Amjad Khan was observed on Sunday.
He died after protracted illness on Nov 11, last year, leaving behind a window, three sons and a daughter.
He worked with different Urdu language newspapers for about five decades. He had the credit of founding the Haripur Union of Journalists and Haripur Press Club and was honored by his students and juniors to serve as uncontested president of the press club for 17 years.
Journalists from across Hazara division, lawyers, political activists, religious leaders, doctors, officials and his friends attended a ceremony on the occasion.
