KARACHI: A separate basketball court will be constructed for girls in Karachi while the renovation and repair work of Nishter Park and Arambagh courts will begin from next month.

This was announced by Commissioner Karachi Iftikhar Shilwani at a reception which was held to honour the Karachi women basketball team on Thursday. The women team fetched a gold medal in the Sindh Games and later made history by making the semifinals of the National Women Basketball Championship — which was held in Islamabad — for the first ever time.

He lauded the efforts and performance of the Karachi girls outfit and said all possible support and encouragement will be provided to them to further excel in the future events.

The commissioner said that he believes in sports as means for creating harmony and peace in the society and a source of unearthing hidden talent of the youngsters. “That’s why I give special significance to promotion of sports,” the commissioner said.

He further said that inter-school and inter-collegiate basketball tournament will be regular events of the Commissioner Karachi annual sports calendars which will be held in collaboration with the Karachi Basketball Association.

Meanwhile, on Dec 25th, a marathon and inter-district basketball tournament will be held under the commissioner’s patronage. KBBA president Ghulam Muhammad, KBBA women wing patron Shahida Parveen, Ghulam Abbas Jamal Advocate were also present on the occasion.
