SUKKUR, June 21: More than 400 activists of various political parties took out a procession and held a demonstration outside the press club here on Tuesday against the proposed division of the district. The activists belonged to the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Pakistan Muslim League-N, Jamiat Ulema-i- Islam and the Shehri Ittehad.

The procession started from the PPP secretariat and after marching through main thoroughfares of the city reached the press club.

Speaking on the occasion, PPP MPA Dr Nasrullah Baloch, District Naib Nazim Iqbal Dawood Pakwala, Sukkur Taluka Nazim Syed Kazim Ali Shah and Jamil Sahito said Sukkur was being divided on lingual basis under a conspiracy. They observed that the move would create hatred among people.

They maintained that people of Sukkur did not believe in rural and urban divide and would not allow the division of the district.

On Monday, more than hundred members of the district council and the Sukkur Taluka Council jointly took out a protest procession against the proposal.

They said the councillors and people of the district would not accept the district’s division.

Earlier, the taluka council at an urgent meeting held at the town hall also criticized the decision.

Convener Wazir Memon presided over the meeting.

The protesting councillors and naib nazims later assembled outside the town hall and marched towards the district council hall where the budget session was under way.

They entered the hall and asked district council members to adopt a resolution against the division. A joint resolution of the taluka and district councils was presented before the meeting which was adopted unanimously by the members of the councils.

RAIN: Sukkur and other parts of the interior of Sindh received rain on Tuesday morning.

The rain started at 7:30am and continued till 9:30am.

On Monday, a heavy duststorm and rain had hit Sukkur, Shikarpur, Jacobabad, Kandhkot, Kashmore, Thul, Ghotki, Mirpur Mathelo, Khairpur and other areas of the Sindh interior.

The duststorm had uprooted hoardings, trees and electricity poles and damaged roofs of kutcha houses. Power supply to the areas had also been affected.

NAZIM: District Nazim Nasir Hussain Shah has announced supply of Sui gas to Hussain Kalwar village and other adjoining 12 villages at a cost of Rs3.9 millions, according to a hand-out issued here on Tuesday.

It said the nazim announced the scheme while addressing a huge gathering at the village in Pano Akil taluka.

Mr Shah said after the devolution plan, record development schemes had been undertaken and completed in the district.
