KARACHI: The inaugural Mayor Karachi Gold Cup Inter-district Hockey League pushes off at the Karachi Hockey Association (KHA) Olympian Hanif Khan-Junaid Ali Shah Stadium in Gulshan Iqbal on Tuesday at 3.30pm.
Teams of six districts of the metropolis — East, West, South, Central, Korangi and Malir — will vie for honours in the event which concludes on Nov 30.
A match between district East and Malir will formally mark the inauguration of the competition. According to organisers, one match will be played daily. Mayor Karachi Wasim Akhtar will inaugurate the league which is being organised by the KHA.
Handsome prizes in cash and kind will be at offer in the event. The winner will be awarded a purse of Rs2,00,000 while the runners-up gets Rs1,00,000. A sum of Rs5,000 will be given to every Player of the Match.
Besides, a brand new 70cc motorcycle will be each will be awarded to Top Scorer of the Tournament, Best Player of the Tournament and Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
The event will help select best 18 players for the KMC hockey team. A selection committee headed by former Olympian Samiullah has been formed which includes Hanif Khan, Jamil Ahmed Khan, Waseem Feroz, KHA secretary Haider Hussain and former international goalkeeper Arshad Hussain.
Meanwhile, the organisers have arranged complete playing kits for every district outfit.
