HARIPUR: Communication and works minister Akbar Ayub Khan on Tuesday asked the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Highway Authority to ensure the completion of Haripur Bypass project within the time set by the provincial government.

He was speaking to the officials of the KPHA, who briefed him on the progress of the project during his visit to the bypass project site.

The minister said the project would benefit the residents of 22 villages of Haripur district directly and hundreds of others indirectly besides increasing economic activities.

He said the project wouldfacilitate people travelling between Hassanabdal and Abbottabad and reduce traffic pressure on the GT Road.

The minister asked the KPHA officials to ensure provision of access routes to all link roads passing by the Haripur bypass.

Meanwhile, members of the oversight committee on Tuesday visited the Haripur Central Jail to examine the implementation of the Supreme Court orders regarding the welfare of prisoners.

The visitors including clinical psychologist Dr Sahira Bibi, lawyer Jawad Habib and human rights activist Sadaqat Khan visited the women’s section and wards of the jail hospital.

They met the doctors and patients and noted down the missing healthcare facilities, especially for treating emergency patients, cardiac problem, ultrasound, the patients of psychiatry, TB and drug addicts’ wards.

ONE KILLED IN ACCIDENT: A man was killed when a speedingvan hit his motorbike here on Tuesday.

The police said Naseer Ahmad of Nartopa village was on the way to Haripur city on his motorcycle when a speeding van coming in from Haripur hit him near Pharhala village leaving him critically injured.

He later died at the DHQ Hospital.

SUICIDE BID: A young man attempted to kill himself over a minor domestic dispute in Kangra Colony here on Tuesday.

The police quoted Lal Khan of Kangra Colony as saying that his son, Babar Khan, 20, was jobless and didn’t take interest in domestic work and therefore, he scolded him.

Feeling hurt, the youngster tried to commit suicide by eating anti-rodent tablets.

The family shifted him to the District Headquarters Hospital, where the doctors, gave him initial treatment and declared his condition to be out of danger.
