HYDERABAD, June 22: Following an announcement that the local bodies elections in cantonment areas of the country will be held on July 30, four union councils have been created in the Hyderabad Cantonment Board.
The cantonment board comprises 11 members, five of them elected and the rest nominated by military authorities as the board works under the Federal Ministry of Defence. The elect members vote one of themselves as the vice-resident of the board. Currently, the population of cantonment areas is around 80,000.
The outgoing elected members of the board are: MPA Zahid Ali Bhurgari of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Mohammad Shahid and Mohammad Farooq of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Saleem Akbar Ali, independent and Yunus Sohail, a minority representative.
“Our proposals regarding division of the union council-4 (old ward-4) have been rejected. It has 17,000 registered voters whereas the rest of the three wards have a total of around 15,500 voters,” said Mr Farooq. He said the Kutcha Qilla and unit-12 (Latifabad) of the union council-4 needed to be divided whereas Saddar and Civil Lines areas were required to be merged.
“We have not received any communication regarding elections work. We too have read in newspapers that the elections have been scheduled for July 30,” said board’s assistant secretary Rana Amanullah.
In union council-1, areas of Hur Camp, Kumhar Para, Shami Army Lines to the Aga Khan Hospital, Gharibabad, Millat-i-Islamia, Pathan, Barrage and Masoom Shah colonies, Shabbir Army Lines, CMH, survey-29, Supariwala Compound and Police Line are included.
Areas of Saddar and Soldier bazaars and the western portion of the Risala Road are part of the union council-2.
Areas of Civil Lines, defence officers housing scheme I and II, Tando Jahania, Tando Mahiman, unit line area, including HQ 18-division, 55 Brigade, cantonment board staff colony, Akhtar Malik, Allama Iqbal, Alamgir, Khalid, Tariq and Liaquat roads Shahbaz Building, Bambino Cinema, some portion of the old campus, gymkhana, southern portion of the Fatima Jinnah Road to the railway line crossing, graveyard to some portion of the Makki Shah Road are located in the union council-3.
The union council-4 includes areas of Kutcha Qilla, Shah Faisal, Mumtaz, Jamhoria, Dawood, Jinnah and Kutchi Abadis Amani Shah colonies, Indus Glass Works, Auto Bhan and Golimar roads up to Gangoo Takkar, Sindh Regimental Centre, a portion of the Badin bus stand, Latifabad unit-12.
