SWABI: A man wanted to police for his alleged terrorist activities was killed and a constable injured in an encounter in the jurisdiction of city police station here on Friday.

Police officials said that they were conducting a search operation in the area when they suddenly confronted one Zeeshan Khan in Shamshakhel area in proper Swabi city. They said that seeing the police party Zeeshan opened indiscriminate fire in which a police constable identified as Jehan Akbar was seriously injured.

The police retaliated fire which led to killing of Zeeshan on the spot. The officials said that one Kalashnikov, magazine and a hand grenade was also recovered from his custody. The police have handed over the body to his family after completing formalities.

The injured constable was taken to a local hospital and later shifted to Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. They said that Zeeshan was wanted to police in various cases and acts of terrorism and that he was brother of Qari Khursheed, who was also wanted. A case in this connection has been registered in CTD police station, Mardan.

HOME-BASED WORKERS: District nazim, Swabi, Hassan Khan inaugurated the district action committee for home-based women workers at a function organised at the district assembly hall on Friday by Center of Excellence for Rural Development.

The committee will lobby for the rights of home-based workers in the district. Representatives of the district government reiterated their commitment to addressing the issues being faced by women workers and other marginalised groups.

Speaking on the occasion, the nazim said that he was aware of lack of required facilities in public spaces that hindered the mobility of women. He said the district government would resolve this problem through his discretionary funds.

Other speakers asked the participants to undertake a women safety audit of the district through a consultative process with the stakeholders.
