GILGIT: The Khunjerab Pass was closed for next four months owing to heavy snowfall here the other day.
Under the Pak-China protocol agreement, the border is usually closed at the end of November and reopens at the start of April.
The Khunjerab Pass is highest paved international border at an altitude of 15,500 feet.
There has been a daily bus service from Sost valley of Gilgit-Baltistan to Xinjiang province of China.
An official of Pakistan Customs requesting anonymity, told Dawn that many attempts to smuggle banned items, including alcohol and mobile phones, were foiled during the current year.

Chinese and Pakistani governments should consider establishing "trains under a roof" type of projects in these high altitude areas so trade and CPEC do not get closed for 1/3rd of the year.

@Imtiaz Ali Khan, I am not sure what you meant by 'close ties'? This has been a practice for long enough because of the heavy snowfalls in the border region and becomes impossible for any cross border vehicle movement.
