The civet cat in captivity before release. — Dawn

MANSEHRA: The wildlife department on Wednesday released a seized civet cat in the far-off Lassa Thakral forest.

Sub-divisional officer (wildlife) Khursheed Abbasi told reporters here that the nocturnal mammal was seized in Mansehra after it attacked a local judge’s family member.

He said the judge’s relative unhurt in the attack, while the female civet cat was freed in its natural habitat, Lassa Thakral forest.

Mr Abbasi said a wildlife department team led by Nadeem Khan Swati and consisting of Mohammad Tariq and Mohammad Waqas was searching for the male partner of the seized mammal to prevent the local population from its attacks.

He said the people living around the New Circuit House locality should immediately inform the department if they spotted the civet cat as it could attack them, especially at night.

POLICEMAN KILLED: A policeman was killed when a pickup van and a passenger wagon collided head-on in Hasmshirian area here on Wednesday. The wagon was bound for Shinkiari.

The accident left two people critical injured, who were shifted to the King Abdullah Teaching Hospital, where doctors pronounced one of them, Mohammad Ishtiaq, a policeman, dead. The other is under treatment there. The police registered an FIR and began investigation into the accident.
