India end Australia Test drought in nail-biter

India ended their decade-long wait for a Test victory in Australia on Monday when they bowled out the home side for 291 to clinch the first game of the four-match series by a nail-biting 31 runs.
The hosts were set a target of 323, a score never before successfully achieved in a fourth innings run chase at the Adelaide Oval.
Ravichandran Ashwin got the final wicket of Josh Hazlewood to finish with 3-92, while for Australia, Shaun Marsh made 62 and Tim Paine 41.
The last Test India won in Australia was at the WACA Ground in Perth in 2008, and the last one in Adelaide was in 2003.
Pant matches world record 11 catches in a Test
Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant equalled the world record for most catches taken in a Test, snaring 11 in the opening clash against Australia.
The 21-year-old, playing in only his sixth Test, matched the record currently held by England's Jack Russell and South Africa's AB de Villiers.
He eclipsed the India record of 10 catches in a game by Wriddhiman Saha.
Russell achieved the feat against South Africa in 1995 and De Villiers matched the achievement against Pakistan in 2013.
Pant reached the milestone by catching Mitchell Starc of the bowling of Mohammed Shami.

Thanks to all Pakistan fans from India. I hope Pakistan cricket team will learn some lessons after their first Home Test lost from New Zealand in 49 years. Pakistan team only focusing on remaining No.1 team in T-20 cricket which for me is not a real cricket. You can gain respect from cricket world only after your away win in test cricket.

It's heartening to see something new from this team. They were down and out on first day, by the end of 2nd session. Old Indian team would have accepted surrender. But this new team fought it out and actually had a first innings lead. Indian pacers had average speed more than that of Aussies. And they looked more threatening than aussies pacers, who I think were one dimensional. Spin is the only department, where Aussies performed better than India. Lyon bowled better than Ashwin in this match. Ashwin was trying too many things.

This is what I said even before the start of the series - Aussies are a force to reckon with at home. And they proved it right. But India was clearly a better side of the two.
Going into next match I see KL and Rohit being replaced by Prithvi Shaw and Vihara. I would be tempted to replace Ashwin by Kuldeep, but that won't happen.

India often finds it very hard to dismiss the tailenders and in this match the Australian lower order came almost very near to the victory post. Just a decade ago in similar situation the Australian lower order might have thrown up a superman who single handedly posted an improbable victory.

Correct. The most talented team in the world has lost each and every test in Aus since 1996. Also they are yet to win a series in Aus and SOuth Africa, just like India. So what's the big deal about being the most talented team in the world.

A morale boosting win for India though not a easy one. Australia got the measure of Indian bowlers can bounce back in the next test. India should consider playing additional spinner but Virat is unlikely to change the winning combination.

Though India won, they made serious error while batting in their second innings. The last 5 Indian batsmen threw away their wickets recklessly once the overall lead came close to 300 runs. Rishab hit Lyon 4,4,4,6 and again attempting another 6 on next ball as if there is no tomorrow. This was very irresponsible. Yes they needed to score quickly but not irresponsibly. They could easily batted until Tea and add another 50 runs knocking Aus out of the match. That was lack of professionalism. I hope they learn from it.
Prithvi Shaw should replace Vijay in mext match.

In fact we need to learn from Pakistan cricket who were a world beating mercurial side in 1990’s. Our cricket team has reached that status under Kumble and Dhoni. Even if khwaja had stayed for 30 more minutes- result would been totally different.
Australia needed just 31 runs in more than 20 overs.

Each team should focus on their primary strengths first which has always been batting for India(since gavaskar era)and pace bowling for Pakistan. India then slowly built up a pace attack. Pakistan should focus on pace bowling and produce pacers like imran wasim waqar again...the recent ones are worse than their dummies

Whoever is saying Australia is weak that's why India defeated them, never said in the past that India was weak thats why Australia defeated India in the past. Obviously someone is weaker than other; thats how it is always and will be same in future. West Indies was also very strong once upon a time.

@Akram Khan, Pakistan knows both Hockey and Cricket, but the players are not getting enough support from Government/Administration/Boards. Unless the system is improved, people will not come and watch, without that money will not come, and players will not play. Its a cycle. At this moment government needs to invest to start the process.

bounce is the most lethal element that Australian pitches have to offer. Ishant is first choice bowler in these conditions due to his height (beside his other bowling skills)

@Akil Akhtar, The bounce in Adelaide was more than you can expect in asian conditions, and it is a drop in pitch that is used in Australia for the last 10+ years, even in the 70s, Adelaide and Sydney would spin more and Bounce less, Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane are known for that

It is instructive to read the many articles on the toss-advantage, especially for home-teams that already have a massive advantage over visitors, for instance cricinfo's "Toss advantage > home advantage?" with detailed studies over the decades. Explains clearly the 4-1 English win over India after the English won the toss five times, when three games were extremely close with two going comprehensively to the two sides. So yes, it is time that we nullify the massive home-advantage and make it fairer by allowing the visiting team to choose. If DRS was opted by BCCI after wasting four years, this would be a no-brainer especially given how adept this number one test team has been in winning at home even after losing the toss ninety percent of the time.
