THATTA, June 25: Twin towns, Thatta and Makli, experienced major power breakdowns after one of the newly-installed oil circuit breakers of the Thatta grid station caught fire on Friday. Both the towns and surrounding villages remained without power for about 23 hours.

As a result the people faced hardships particularly the patients at the civil hospital.

Routine trade activities remained suspended due to power failure.

The situation worsened as municipal authorities failed to operate water pumping machines and there was an acute water shortage in the towns.

Hesco deputed special teams and restored power on Saturday.

This was stated by speakers at a workshop organized by the Health and Nutrition Development Society and the population welfare department at Hashim Mandhro village near Bhambhore on Saturday.

Rizwana Palijo, Mustafa Zaur and Faisal Mahar spoke on the occasion.

They said 80 per cent deliveries in Pakistan were being carried out by non-professional untrained birth attendants.

They said that one of the major reasons of mothers’ death were profuse bleeding at the time of delivery.

The participants adopted several resolutions and called upon the department concerned to administer vaccines to women.
