PESHAWAR: A man shot dead five family members, including his father and three brothers, before ending his own life here on Wednesday, police said.

They said the incident took place in Gulay Baba area of Tehkal at around 3.45pm, when Abdullah, 23, said to be mentally disturbed, opened fire on his family members over a minor dispute. Later, he committed suicide with the same gun.

SP cantonment Waseem Riaz said the accused killed his father, Jan Mohammad, brothers Jawad, Luqman and Zaibullah, and uncle Faqir Mohammad before ending his own life.

SP Riaz said the accused was mentally disturbed and the apparent reason was a minor domestic issue. Police recovered a 9mm pistol used in the shooting.

Meanwhile, in another incident, unknown attackers shot dead a police constable in the limits of Tehkal police station late on Tuesday.

SP Riaz said the police were alerted about a murder near the Subhan Abad canal and the body was later identified to be of policeman Ahmed Yar.

He said the cop was a resident of Tehkal Bala, adding a purse, mobile phones and service card were found on the body. He said police investigators had also recovered four empties from the crime scene.

A Tehkal police official said the Counter-Terrorism Department had registered FIR and was investigating the killing.

Meanwhile, city police chief Qazi Jamilur Rehman told a press conference on Wednesday that 11 car-lifters had been arrested and 16 stolen vehicles recovered from them.

He said the police had earlier last week handed over several recovered vehicles to their owners. He said eight of the accused had been presented before courts, while other three were currently being interrogated.
