ISLAMABAD: Former world squash champion Jansher Khan advised all young players to focus on their fitness to win international events.

Speaking to Dawn on Sunday, the squash legend said lack of fitness was the main reason why Pakistani players could not make the most of the numerous international events at home by winning titles.

“Our players are skillful and there is a need to work on their fitness,” said Jansher.

“I have been witnessing Pakistani players don’t have the stamina and speed, essential for winning mega international events,” he said.

Jansher said more work should be put in players’ coaching and a higher number of qualified coaches should be involved in the game to groom players.

“If our players want to be champions, they have to focus on their fitness. They have to give their full time to game,” he said.

Jansher said it was commendable for Pakistan to host several international events this year.

He said that current prime minister of the country, Imran Khan — who himself has been a sportsman — and the armed forces will keep on playing their respective roles for the betterment and excellence of squash.

He also hailed the special role played by Chief of Air Staff Mujahid Anwar Khan for his support in the restoration and revival of international squash by holding mega international tournaments of squash in Pakistan.
