Trump mocks Indian PM for library in Afghanistan

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday mocked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for funding a library in Afghanistan, suggesting it was of no use.
Trump brought up India's aid during a rambling press appearance at a cabinet meeting as he defended his push for the United States to invest less overseas.
While stating that he got along with Modi, Trump said the Indian leader was "constantly telling me he built a library in Afghanistan".
"You know what that is? That's like five hours of what we spend," Trump said.
"And we're supposed to say, 'Oh, thank you for the library.' I don't know who's using it in Afghanistan," Trump said.
It was unclear to which project Trump was referring, but India has committed $3 billion in assistance to Afghanistan since US-led forces toppled the extremist Taliban regime after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Projects have included the reconstruction of an elite high school in Kabul and scholarships to India for 1,000 Afghan students each year.
Inaugurating the Afghan parliament building in 2015 after reconstruction financed by India, Modi promised to promote programmes "empowering Afghan youth with modern education and professional skills".
India has been one of the most enthusiastic countries over the US mission in Afghanistan, where the former Taliban regime sheltered fiercely anti-Indian militants.
Trump last month moved to pull all 2,000 US troops out of Syria and cut by half the 14,000-strong force in Afghanistan, calling for less spending overseas.
Alluding in Wednesday's remarks to the 1979-1989 Soviet occupation of Afghanistan, Trump said: "Russia used to be the Soviet Union. Afghanistan made it Russia because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan."

There was a great Library in Alexandria (Egypt) which was burned out for two reasons (1) If whatever knowledge the Library holds is already in our holy book, no need for it to remain, and (2) if this library holds knowledge against what is told in our Holy Book, it should definitely not exist.....Afghan Taliban, and countries supporting them, are no different from those "Heroes" who burnt the Library at Alexandria. Trump is therefore not mocking Modi, but a mindset.

Trump would rather be happy if India sent its troops to fight the Taliban & buy more weapons from US companies. But Modi used USA to advance his agenda & showed Trump the middle finger when Trump made untenable demands. Unlike the US which has come from 5000 miles away, Afghanistan is in India's neighbourhood. Wonder why China hasn't sent its troops there? By educating the Afghans, India has created a votary for development & peace within Afghanistan. Had Ahmad Shah Massoud been alive today, this is exactly the sort of help he'd have thanked India for. But can't expect Trump to understand India's priorities. India has to do what is appropriate for its own interests.

India has pledged some $3 billion to be spend in neighbouring countries i.e. Bhutan, Nepal, SriLanka, Bangladesh. What doesn't make sense is the mone they are spending in countries they do not share borders with, like Iran and Afghanistan some $4bn is spent there along with their funding terrorism activities.

India and Modi are dead right by building library and providing scholarships to 1000 students/year to study in Indian universities. The current Afghan PM is a graduate of Delhi university. This is exactly how India built its goodwill & soft power across the globe esp. in African continent to name a few countries like Kenya, Tanzania. It may not be to Trumps liking but troops will be sent only under UN ask & not under USA directives.
India has actually done real development of constructing Afghanistan if one were to analyse the details of $3 Billion spent by India to name a few below :
1) Salma Dam in Herat province for $290 Mn irrigates 75000 hectares of land
2) India is working on building new transmission lines, roads & over 400 high-impact community development projects.
3) Afghan Parliament bldg @ cost of $90 Mn.
4) Delaram-Zaranj Highway for $130 Mn fully spent by India.
Let any government come in future in Afghanistan; India will remain a true friend of Afghanistan.

Modi should stop being boastful atleast in international diplomatic stages. Other world leaders may also be thinking what Trump thought but might not be saying it openly. It is high time our PM recognises this and changes the tone of his speeches accordingly.
