A 5.8 magnitude earthquake jolted several cities in the northern parts of the country — including Peshawar, Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Kohat, Swat, Mianwali and Sargodha — on Saturday evening.
According to India Today, the tremors were also felt in parts of North India.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department's National Seismic Monitoring Centre in Islamabad, the earthquake took place at a depth of 208 kilometres in the Hindu Kush Region in Afghanistan at a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter scale.
Earlier in the day, a mild tremor was also felt in Karachi at 7:38am. According to the Met department, it was recorded at a 2.9 magnitude on the Richter scale. Local media reported that it was felt in several parts of the megalopolis.

In the wake of this earthquake, we should revise our policy of building mega dams. They can also cause earthquakes. Not saying all earthquakes are caused by dams or all dams cause earthquakes, but if there are better and safer options available, then why not?

@Karachiwala, agree with you 100% - dams can cause earthquakes - unfortunately, nobody can dare question building the dam in Pakistan or discussing other more effective options, like fixing the irrigation system to reduce water losses, otherwise we get branded as traitors.

@Karachiwala, I agree with you. Let the high ups find better, more economical and cheaper alternative in line with our national income. Our country cannot afford to build mega dams. Let us do more research before finally deciding what is in our best interest.

@Arif Godil, If all the rivers are linked, water wastage can be curbed & the land for irrigation could increase..

@Karachiwala, You have a point there. I was talking to my uncle other day who teaches Geology. He told Pakistan sits on a seismic fault line between 2 plates. All the locations where we intend to build dams are into Moderate to High hazard zones. Dams are not only risky from point of view of loss to life, but also they are financially risky. Also not to forget they are sitting ducks in case of wars. So not sure, I have mixed opinions about mega-dams. May be time to invest in unconventional energy sources.

@karachiwala, Saif Shrazei, Arif Godil all indians or indian pawns part of the same futile campaign against dam building. This dam causing earthquake hilarious logic can only be brought up by Indians.

Karachiwala is misled. Earthquakes are not really caused by dams.
Hindukush and northern areas of Pakistan are prone to earthquakes like 'ring of fires' region covering Japan, Indonesia, New Zealand, Hawai and surrouding areas.

@Karachiwala,saif, There are just a few dams in Pakistan (which are not enough) but still we experience earthquakes. The one in 2005 destroyed the northern areas of our country. A proof that we will keep experiencing tremors whether or not we construct dams. And if you must propagate your false beliefs then why don't you tell this to India and China who are hell bent on constructing bigger and bigger dams for their nation. Fixing the irrigation system won't solve any problems. We need water storage. Every year floods destroy crops, livestock and property because of the heavy flow of water from india. If only we had constructed some more dams, we could store that water. The whole world is constructing dams and our pseudointellectuals preach us that dams are not necessary. Why don't you talk about the real agenda? Real agenda is to kill Pakistanis by creating shortage of water. Indian media has talked about this many times. They are also trying to divert the rivers that flow to pakistan.
