HARIPUR: The district council, Haripur, on Thursday elected Akhtar Nawaz Khan as the new district nazim.

He was nominee of the parliamentary board of PTI, headed by federal minister for energy Omar Ayub Khan.

The process of filing nominations by candidates, scrutiny of nominations and polling was completed on Thursday. AC Mujtaba Arfat was the returning officer. As there was not a single candidate against the PTI’s nominee, all the 54 of 67 members who were in attendance voted in favour of Akhtar Nawaz through show of hands.

The members from main opposition party PML-N and JI also voted in favour of the PTI’s candidate.

The seat had fallen vacant when officiating district nazim Raja Nasir Kiyani died of cardiac arrest on March 19. Raja had succeeded Adil Islam who was removed from office after no-trust motion on January 10, 2019.
