SWABI: A kabaddi tournament concluded in Chota Lahor tehsil on Tuesday, providing an opportunity to the locals to witness one of their favourite traditional sports.

The final match was played between Anbar and Wazirabad teams, which was won by the latter. Former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief Akhtar Ali Shah and Razaar tehsil nazim Khalid Haqqani were the chief guests on the occasion.

The final match was witnessed by a large crowd who poured there from different regions.

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, the guests said it was responsibility of the provincial government to promote the traditional games to prevent the youth from falling into wrong hands.

The former IGP said the organisers of the tournament had played a great role in promotion of the game. “The young players in entire Pakhtun region only need a platform and training to display their talent,” he said.

He said if Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government desired to promote healthy activities in the province it should support the holding of kabaddi tournaments. “Directorate of sports KP has to take practical steps for promotion of local games,” he said.

The Razaar tehsil nazim said directorate of sports could discover new talent if the kabaddi competitions were regularly held at the district and village levels.

He stressed that the industry and affluent class should sponsor the different teams.

The chief guests awarded trophies to both the winning and the runner-up teams.

MAN DIES ON ROAD: Ismail Khan, a resident of Swabi city, was killed after being hit by a van while crossing the Swabi-Jehangira road on Tuesday, said police.

An FIR was registered in the city police station against the driver.

RELEASED: Uzair Aslam and Shah Hussain, the two accused in a drug smuggling case, were set free by a court in Chota Lahor on Tuesday.

The two from Yar Hussain region had been in the Swabi judicial lockup for last two and half years, but no drug smuggling case was proved against them.
