LARKANA: Larkana district council chairman Khan Mohammad Sangro announced on Saturday withdrawing the resignation he had tendered three days ago over what he had described as scathing criticism of his performance by pro-Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) members in the council’s session.

He made the announcement in a meeting held at Naudero House in which PPP Sindh president Nisar Ahmed Khuhro heard Mr Sangro and the council members who were opposed to him and persuaded them to bury the hatchet.

Mr Khuhro had arrived in Larkana along with Larkana district PPP president Abdul Fatah Bhutto, Larkana city president Nooruddin Abro, Larkana district general secretary Khair Mohammad Shaikh, MPA Hizbullah Bughio, Shakeel Memon and others after hearing news of Mr Sangro’s resignation.

A source privy to the talks told Dawn that Mr Khuhro inquired from both the parties about the situation that led to rumpus during the session, leaving the chairman no other option but to submit resignation to cool down tempers.

Mr Sangro and the council members accused each other of adopting harsh and arrogant attitude in the session and said the no member had asked him even once to step down.

“We are simply demanding uniformity and equality in the distribution of development works among all union councils and urging him to respect members,” they said, adding that Mr Sangro ignored them and threatened to resign in a move they could not comprehend.

Shakeel Memon, spokesman for Mr Khuhro, said in a statement that the meeting decided that Mr Sangro would take back his resignation as chairman of district council. The meeting also decided that all members, including the chairman, would adopt humane and professional conduct and the council would meet regularly every month. The last session of the council was held after a gap of six months.

The two sides agreed to consult with each other over the agenda before going for the session so as to avoid repeating the unpleasant situation in the house, he said.

Mr Khuhro said that ongoing work on development schemes should not suffer at any cost and its pace and quality should be monitored. There would be no compromise on the issue of development, he said.

The meeting finally settled the dispute by deciding that members would repose confidence in the chairman and those who had talked against the chairman and others would jointly table a resolution reposing confidence in Mr Sangro in next session of the council.
