BAHAWALPUR: The much-trumpeted Safe City Project hits a snag for want of Rs1 billion funds by the government.
The project was announced by the Punjab government during Shahbaz Sharif’s government. More than Rs20 million had been sanctioned. With the release of the initial amount, the construction work of the building of the project had been taken in hand.
Under the project more than 400 CCTV cameras and other security gadgets and equipment were to be installed at the city’s entry and exit points. But the construction of the building came to a halt when the flow of the funds was discontinued after the change of the government.
Regional Police Officer Imran Mahmood confirmed to Dawn that the work had been stopped after the shortage of funds.
He said the building was near completion at district police lines and expressed the hope that in the ADP of the new fiscal year, the allocation of remaining funds would be made.
