ISLAMABAD: The army has said three officers convicted of espionage have been handed over to prison authorities.
On May 30, Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa ratified death sentences for retired Brigadier Raja Rizwan and Dr Wasim Akram and 14-year imprisonment for retired lieutenant general Javed Iqbal.
Maj Gen Asif Ghafoor, the director general of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), said on Saturday night that the three officers were handed over to “civil jail authorities”.
He tweeted that the convicts were “immediately arrested upon intelligence about their involvement and remained under military custody throughout their respective trial. The ISPR had said that the trio was convicted of “espionage/leakage of sensitive information to foreign agencies prejudice to the national security” by separate Field General Court Martial under the Pakistan Army Act and the Official Secret Act.
