BAHAWALPUR: A first-ever zigzag brick kiln of the district became functional on Saturday near Uch Sharif, about 70km from here.

The brick kiln was launched in a ceremony participated by the officials of environment department and the office-bearers of the kiln owners association.

The zigzag technology brick kiln has been established by one Hazoor Bakhsh Jamra who said he had set up the kiln with the hope that it would bring profit to him. He said the design of the kiln had been acquired from Nepal.

Speaking on the occasion, assistant director environment Muhammad Idrees said with the zigzag technology in brick kilns, smog and pollution could be reduced in the area while the owners’ income would also increase. He lauded all the owners of brick kilns who responded positively to the decision of the government and were switching to the zigzag technology at their brick kilns.

MURDER: A man allegedly axed his wife to death in connivance with his three relatives in Makhdoomwala Basti in the Saddar Ahmedpur East police limits, about 40km from here.

In the first information report (FIR), the complainant, Faiz Bibi, the mother of deceased, Razia Mai, said her son-in-law Farooq had strained relations with her daughter and he used to torture her. Farooq, with the help of his father Amir Baksh, relative Akmal and his wife Mairaj Bibi overpowered Razia and axed her to death, she alleged.

The police claimed to have arrested Farooq while others managed to flee. The police shifted the body to the Ahmedpur East Tehsil Headquarters Hospital (THQ) for post-mortem.
