JF-17 becomes star attraction at Paris Air Show

ISLAMABAD: Hordes of aviation enthusiasts turned up to see the static and aerial display of the Pakistan Air Force (PAF)’s JF-17 Thunder fighter jet on the last day of 53rd Paris Air Show in Le Bourget on Sunday.
Being a weekly holiday, the vast venue was filled with excited spectators of different ages as the gates opened for general public, according to a message received from Paris.
The indigenously manufactured JF-17 Thunder, displayed alongside other aircraft and defence equipment at the event, remained the star attraction of the show.
The PAF personnel briefed the eager crowd about the combat aircraft’s operational capabilities and sophisticated weaponry. The spectators were ecstatic to see the pride of Pakistan in their midst and had selfies and photographs with the PAF contingent members.
Apart from the static display, the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex- manufactured aircraft also presented a farewell aerobatics performance. The excitement of the eagerly awaiting crowd was worth watching as the aircraft roared in the skies of Paris. The much anticipated display was thoroughly enjoyed by the spectators and they fervently clapped as the JF-7 landed back at the airstrip.
The participation of the PAF contingent in the largest air show of the world has proved to be an excellent opportunity to showcase its cutting edge capabilities. It has also given an opportunity to the potential buyers to assess the jet fighter’s immense potential in the international market.

Calling this the star attraction of the show would be misleading the gullible piblic . Perhaps the author did not tune into the airbus order book in day 1 or the 200+ order of the beleaguered Boeing 737 max
On day 2 . Overall the air show produced an order book of more than 50 billion US$ of which not one order is known for projected star of the show . I completely value the participation and potential but like with everything else don’t over promise and under deliver.

Please stop boasting yourself. J-17 is assembled in Pakistan and not manufactured. Manufacturing means each and every component is made in Pakistan. Like the wings, the cockpit, the engines, everything. Hence importing aircraft in CKD condition and assembling it does not mean manufacturing. There are many other aircrafts in display.

I was at the Paris Air Show and the JF 17 was displayed as a Chinese made aircraft with a Russian engine -- not a word about assembly plants like pakistan
The JF 17 was in the China section and Russian engine section -- pakistan was not displayed or mentioned anywhere -- that is the truth -- check the paris air show website.

In a first JF-17 performed all its maneuvers in the smallest envelop possible in an air show. No wonder Pakistan-designed aerodynamics of an air craft matching other countries expectations too. The natural-green bird was looking awesome and energetic against the clouds. The selfie participants had Su-30's death in mind on Feb 27, 2019 when taking the selfies with JF-17.

No doubt the JF-17 is an excellent fighter-bomber, but due credit must be given to the Chinese who designed and manufactured it with us.
It was initially manufactured in China and then assembled and manufactured here with Chinese input. Even the Block 3 version is being done with Chinese help. We have to stop trumpeting our achievements and be humble. Salams

@Tamir, You miss the point by miles. I'll fill you in.
An aircraft is designed depending on what functions it will be used to perform. JF-17 is Pakistan's because it's Pakistan's engineers and pilots who according to their country's need came up with the aerodynamic design of an aircraft. To manufacture their item they contacted their friend China who looked for an already available off the shelf manufacturing solution.
We are talking about Block-I of the aircraft, the beginning. Block-III aircraft with twin-seater and avionics of a 4.5 generation aircraft. PAF spearheads and owns the JF-17 project and it's getting better with every feedback of it's pilots. This makes the jet Pakistani in character.
Here's the break out
Idea, aerodynamic design (PAF) + Manufacturing (Chinese initially, now Pakistani) + Engine (Russian, but now fully licensed to be produced in China)
Any change in structural design and all the manufacturing except the engine is done by Pakistani hands now.

It's a cost effective multi-role fighter aircraft where 'bombing' is just one of the roles among many showcases your understanding of the bird. Not a game of feelings, Pakistan's manufacturing is definitely on the downside due to the lack of political will funding but PAF's minds and manufacturing complexes are a different ball game. Somebody already have mentioned Kamra somewhere in the comments. They've been manufacturing and exporting their trainer aircrafts to their friendly countries for 30 years now. They are successfully overhauling 50 years old aircraft with an envious air safety record whereas the neighbor can have as much as 10 aerial accidents in a month. You need to give credit where it's due. PAF is also corruptionless.

Paris air show featured only 2 kinds of fighter jets one was domestically made Dassault Rafale and another was Chinese made Pakistan assembled JF-17. This was the first time top aircrafts of region such as Euro fighter Typhoon and Saab Grippen stayed out. Dubbed as one of the most lacklustre air show there is nothing to talk about since no aircraft sale agreements/MoU were signed post the paris airshow(which is the prime aim of such events).

All credit goes to PAF. brighter history of PAF: In the 1967 Arab-Israel war, volunteer pilots from the Pakistani Air Force downed no less than 10 Israeli aircrafts without losing a single pilot or a single aircraft!!
In 1973, Flt. Lt. A. Sattar Alvi became the first Pakistani pilot to shoot down an Israeli Mirage in air combat, he was flying a Syrian aircraft. Similarly PAF pilot Flt. Lt. M. Hatif, in an Egyptian MiG-21 shot down an Israeli F-4 phantom during air combat.

JF 17 in comparison to Rafale, later has the advantages of lighter engine, better radar signatures but in terms of avionics Rafale is far beyond and having tremendous results. JF 17 not even proved in shorter time to be the best but now in competition to Eurofighter, Typhoon, upcoming Tejas and SU-35 now adays. PAF should take advantage of the latest technology and get over on the outcomes in comparison to Rafale and SU as they are called superiority fighter. Wishing best of luck for our success. You choose your own design, and fitting. China is about the cloth and stitching. PAF deffo have an originality to claim as far as JF-17 is concerned, and a license to sell them out of which China does not get a dime. You can use the resources of your friends to materialize your idea. India is free to use USA's if they have that level of friendship with them.

We are not hoping INR will replace USD. Working with software and hardware does not mean owning them. It belongs to who it belongs. You get you pay per hour that's all.

PAF is trying it's best, and all Pakistanis should appreciate that...
Hopefully, Islamic countries would show some interest in buying the product.

They have sold 16 aircrafts to Mayanamnar and 4 to Nigeria......more orders are also in the pipeline but are kept secretive so that other manufacturers don't pitch in their products to compete....Keep it up Pakistan Aeronautical Complex, Kamra

Like with everything else, China used stolen technology to design this aircraft, and then passed on the assembly work to Pakistan, which might have been just painting the aircraft. Kudos to Pakistan for this achievement!

So, when I buy a computer with the hard disk, ram, cpu, etc. specifications and buy it from Dell or Toshiba, as per you analogy, I designed the PC and Dell manufactured it based on my design. Same thing goes when buying cars, TVs, mobile phones, residential units.
Wow! Thank you!! I did not know I was a computer designer and a car designer, and a TV designer, and a mobile phone designer, and a building designer!!!

@S Bara, Mig 21 was modified long ago by china under license from russia. And Pakistan is not claiming that its her invention infact the research and investment was done on 50 50 basis. first 6 units were manufactured in China by Chinese and Pakistani engineers in equal ratio.

Attention to detail is a rare treat in Pakistan, it's a common perception to believe "no one will notice" it's because of this limited ability which subsequently leaves us incapable of delivering anything substantial...we have not been able to develop a motorbike engine and a complete motorbike produced in Pakistan...not talking about cars and other sophisticated vehicles, I think a fighter jet is a far fetch, but wish my country well...passion and desire to achieve what we want will fulfill our dreams...lies and decent will rotten us and tarnish our image if not done so already.

The JF-17 is an evolving platform catering for many makets with the latest block 3 on par with the Russian and western 4th gen machines. 4 JF-17's are equivalent in price to a F35. Question is who would win in a 4 against 1 and could one buy a F-35?

Every time there's air show somewhere - Dubai, UK or Paris - JF17 is there. THe same model that has been showcased since 2009. And we hear some countries have 'shown interest in buying some', Yet no sales figures have been provided, nor which country has actually taken delivery of any and how many $ millions were earned.
The hype I've heard so far in 10 years about this only aircraft produced in collaboration with China, (no other models or classes are even mentioned) you would think this aircraft is about to replace Euro-Figher or F-35 and Eurpeans and Ameicans are going to buy it from Pakistan!
Reality is, outside of Pakistan and China, hardly anyone owns one.

What a plane when its colored in the Pakistani flag - looks like a plane not to be messed with - very menacing! Its worth mentioning though - the flier is just as important as the plane itself.

This wont be the first time our name has been ereased seamlessly. The middle east i believe Jordan ereased our name from their history books regarding how our fighter pilots fought on the Palestinian side against Israel and both hit target but also never lost a jet. Look it up. They asked for out help. Pakistan sent their best pilots. Later no credit or mention.

Having worked in aerospace industry and avid reader of Aviation Week, I did not seen a single word mentioned about JF-17 in international press, let alone the star of the show. Airbus and Boeing got billions in orders but star of the show did not get any. Does anyone in the press know that what happened to the orders which Pakistan was going to receive? Also can anyone mention that what parts were designed in Pakistan and which parts are being made in Pakistan? I have seen news in Pakistani press about JF-17 made in Pakistan being being flown by Myanmar's AF, which is absolutely wrong, those planes were made in China.

@Javed, my dear , defense article selling and purchasing is not an easy task. Its not olx or any other app on which you sell your old iphone. Its tedious process and takes a long time just look at the MMRCA deal in India it has taken more than 10 years and still is under going. Furthermore, its a pride of our nation that we are able to build more than 60% of the systems avionics in JF17, and the world recognizes its potential. It is already been sold to Nigeria and Myanmar and many other nations looking for cheap high end system are also, seeking JF17. i hope this reply will soothe your nerves

It takes between 25 and 30 seconds for anyone to go online and find out that you're lying. That's how easy it is nowadays. Not only is the aircraft produced and assembled in Pakistan, it was also jointly designed by Pakistan and China.

In these trying times, when there is hardly any good news coming from the incompetent prime minister, this news lifts spirits.
Must thank the previous PM (Nawaz Sharif, PML-N) for allocating the funds and resources and gaining the trust of the Chinese to making the JF-17 possible.
Must also thank the Air Chief Marshall Shoail Aman and current ACM Mujahid Anwar Khan for adopting the new fighter into the ranks so quickly and training their staff to fly, maintain the aircraft.
