GUJRANWALA: The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested former managing director (MD) of the Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa), Khalid Bashir Butt, on corruption charges and for having been appointed illegally.

According to NAB sources, Butt was an employee of the public health engineering department, but allegedly through political support got the post of the Wasa MD and remained on the position for nine years.

They further said that Butt was assigned this post illegally because, according to law, an incumbent could remain the MD of Wasa for three years, but Butt received illegal extensions during which he amassed assets beyond his known sources of income. Several applications had been submitted to heads of various departments against Butt’s alleged embezzlement, they added.

The case was assigned to the NAB and after initial investigation Butt was found guilty. The department arrested him from Lahore.

According to sources, Butt is a right-hand man of a known political personality of Gujranwala and the NAB can move against this person very soon.
