KARACHI: A man was shot dead in the Azizabad area on Monday afternoon, police said.
They added that the man, later on identified as Usman Malik, 30, was shot dead by gunmen riding motorbikes in Block-8 of FB Area near Tanzeemul Momineen Imambargah.
Gulberg SP Mohammed Ayaz told Dawn that he was riding a motorbike when four suspects on two other motorcycles opened fire on him and fled. He sustained multiple bullet wounds and was driven to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival, said police surgeon Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi. Dr Abbasi added that the victim received 12 bullet wounds on different parts of his body.
SP Ayaz said that the victim had been identified through a friend of his. The friend told the police that Usman Malik was involved in poultry business. Previously, he lived in Lyari but recently he had shifted his family to their native place in Punjab and was living at his father’s home in Defence. The friend told the police that Mr Malik had gone there to meet a friend at a restaurant in Liaquatabad No. 10.
The Gulberg SP said the exact motive for the murder was not known. However, the city police spokesperson said the “incident appears to be a targeted killing”, adding that further investigation was under way.
The victim originally hailed from Rawalpindi and supplied poultry meat in Azizabad, added the spokesperson.
Investigators collected around five spent bullet casings fired from a 9mm pistol from the crime scene.
Meanwhile, Sindh IGP Dr Syed Kaleem Imam took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the Central SSP.
Woman strangled for ‘honour’
A mother of three children fell victim to a so-called honour killing in the Gulshan-i-Hadeed area on Monday, Steel Town police said.
They added that Ayesha, 40, was strangled by her husband, Mohammed Husain, inside their home in Phase-II. The police arrested the suspect.
During initial probe, the held suspect “confessed” to killing his wife in the name of ‘honour’, said area SHO Shakir Ali. He added that the alleged killer did not show any remorse over murdering his wife.
The body was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.
Two men shot at by robbers
Two men were shot at and injured by suspected robbers over resistance in the outskirts of the city on Monday, according to Bin Qasim police.
They added that Tahir Khan, 30, and Sarfaraz were injured by armed robbers as they put up resistance.
