LAHORE: The PPP may observe death anniversary of Benazir Bhutto in Rawalpindi’s Liaquat Bagh, where the former party chairperson and two time prime minister was assassinated 12 years ago, a senior PPP leader privy to the development tells Dawn.
“We’ve suggested Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari to observe Mohtarma’s death anniversary this time in Rawalpindi where she was martyred on Dec 27, 2007,” the official said.
The party has so far been observing the anniversary at Garhi Khuda Bakhsh, native town of Bhuttos where she is also buried.
Hoping that the chairman would consider the proposal, the official said the show would be a kind of revisiting past memories. He said the change of the venue would also help boosting morale of jiyalas of the region.
He said that in another unprecedented move, the party was going to celebrate its foundation day in Muzaffarabad on Nov 30 for the first time since its creation in 1967.
Meanwhile, the party chairman’s central Punjab visit has also been rescheduled. He was to speak at various public meetings and rallies in central Punjab next week. Now, he will visit in the first week of December.
An official of the Punjab chapter of the party says the JUI-F’s Islamabad sit-in and some pressing local and foreign engagements of the chairman necessitated the rescheduling.
He says Mr Bhutto-Zardari will address at least one public meeting or workers convention in each division of central Punjab.
