ISLAMABAD: An army officer was shot dead in G-9/1 on Thursday night, police said.

A police officer told Dawn that Maj Mohammad Larib Akhter, an SSG commando stationed in Attock, came to Islamabad on official duty and was visiting his friend at the time of the incident.

They were sitting on a greenbelt when two persons came and fired at the army officer, the police officer said, adding that as a result he suffered a bullet injury to his head and died on the spot.

After the autopsy, his body was handed over to his family for burial, he added.

Another police officer quoting his friend as saying that two persons came and asked them to hand over valuables and cash. When the army officer tried to talk to them, one of the robbers fired at him and both escaped, he said.

Two teams headed by SP Saddar Omer Khan and SP Investigation Dr Sardar Mustafa Tanveer, are investigating the incident, the police officer said, adding Special Branch of the police and Intelligence Wing of the Counter Terrorism Force have been asked to assist the investigators.

The officer said it seemed it was a robbery, but investigators are probing the case from all angles.

A team was examining the footage captured from the cameras of Safe City Project installed in G-9/1.

A case has been registered with the Karachi Company police on the complaint lodged by the officer’s brother Flt-Lt Mohammad Zohaib.
