LAHORE: A woman journalist of a local newspaper was allegedly shot at and killed outside her workplace located in the jurisdiction of Qila Gujjar Singh police on Monday.

Identified as Urooj Iqbal (27), the woman received a bullet to her head which later proved fatal, according to the police inquiries.

The Qila Gujjar Singh police lodged a murder case and nominated her husband Dilawar Ali, also a journalist of a local newspaper, on the complaint of Urooj’s brother Yasir Iqbal.

Yasir told the police that she had contracted love marriage with Dilawar of Qila Dildar Singh, Gujranwala, some seven months back.

A few months after marriage, relations between the two got sour due to some domestic issues, he said alleging that Dilawar used to torture Urooj on petty matters.

Most probably, the suspect used to press her to quit the job, he said.

Recently, Yasir said, his sister had got a case lodged against Dilawar at local police station when he subjected her to torture again.

Meanwhile, elders from both sides resolved the matter but Dilawar nourished a grudge against her, he said.

A couple of days back, Yasir told the police that he got a call from Urooj who said Yasir hurled life threats at her.

“On Monday, someone told me that your sister has been shot dead outside her workplace,” he said.

Civil Lines Operations SP Dost Mohammad told Dawn that Urooj was entering her office when a man armed with a pistol fired a shot and fled the scene.

He said Urooj received a bullet to her head and succumbed to her injuries instantly.

She was living in a room adjacent to the newspaper office in the same building, he said adding that the police obtained footage of the CCTV installed at the building and sent it for forensic analysis.

He said police and the locals living in nearby offices in the building were unaware of identity of the suspected killer.

The body was shifted to the city morgue for autopsy.

The SP said a team was sent for arrest of the suspect.
