Dua was kidnapped for ransom, say police

KARACHI: The police authorities believe that law student Dua Mangi was kidnapped for ransom.
The young woman was kidnapped by armed men from Bukhari Commercial in the DHA early on Sunday while her friend Haris Fatah Soomro was shot at and wounded.
South Zone DIG Sharjeel Kharal said on Thursday that “it appears to be a case of kidnapping for ransom”. It had been ascertained through investigation that the student was kidnapped for ransom, he said, but did not elaborate. The DIG South was leading different teams of police probing the incident.
According to a Karachi police spokesperson, police were investigating the case from different aspects as more than 12 persons had been questioned.
The police and Citizens-Police Liaison Committee were also probing the incident from the perspective of a past kidnapping case, according to a police statement.
In May, a girl, Ms Bisma, had been kidnapped from DHA and she returned home reportedly after payment of ransom.
Meanwhile, lawyers and members of civil society, students of S.M. Law College and relatives on Thursday held a protest demonstration outside Karachi Press Club for Dua’s safe recovery.
Dua’s cousin Keenjhar Sindhu told the media that several days had passed, but the authorities had failed to trace her.

@shamshad, - street crimes were at its peak when so called “Educated” had key positions in Sindh government. Whats needed is some serious reforms in police which both “Educated” and waderas dont want. Also, police inductions are done on quota basis and I wonder why local “Educated” youth dont apply for it? Even if there is a foul play there, it must be exposed through media and courts instead of sitting back and bashing quota system.

Very dubious. Police seems to know a lot but still hasn't been able to rescue the poor girl. I'm not sure it's a simple ransom case. Federal FIA or similar agency must move in to take over the investigation asap. My prayers for Dua Mangi.

@shamshad, I think that in Karachi your idea might not work. Educated youth there are also affiliated with various parties and groups . I think the best thing for Sindh Government would be to remove all police from Karachi thanas etc etc. The city's policing should be leased out to Pakistan Army. They have many retired officers and jawans who are young , fit, disciplined and trained. They could do a great job under their own officers. What's the harm in trying? A special pilot project.
